14. Connecting a Triton to a PC (1)
[Q14.1] I have tried many times with the software to connect the cable to my 
        laptop. Every time the computer fires up, it Hangs. It doesn't 
        recognize the fact that the software is loaded. When I remove the cable 
        from either the laptop or the Triton, the computer starts from where it 
        left off. I have disabled the Infra red port of the laptop, but this 
        still doesn't get me anywhere. Everything I try ends in failure. Any 
        clues?

[Q16.1] Is the MOSS extension polyphonic and multitimbral?
[Q16.2] How can I use the MOSS extension in the sequencer and in Combination

        can't I access the new sounds?

*** 2. General Questions ***

[Q2.1] What are the differences between Triton, Triton Pro and Triton Pro-X?

Only the number of keys:

-- Triton: 61 keys ("light" touch)
-- Triton Pro: 76 keys ("light" touch)
-- Triton Pro-X: 88 weighted keys ("piano"-like touch)

All the rest (main features plus extensions) is the same.

[Q2.2] All my C and D banks are blank. No trace of banks C and D on the preload 
       disks...

Maybe you didn't receive all the three preload disks. You can download the "C-D 
Banks" disks here {http://www.tritonhaven.com/}.

[Q2.3] What's about this third factory disk some people are talking about?
[A2.3] 
Early Tritons came with 3 disks. Preload disk 1 had banks A/B programs and 
combi's.Preload disk 2 has sample data for the demo's. Disk 3 was a made in the 
U.S. disk containing banks A/B/C/D programs and combi's as well as the demo's 
from disk 1. This disk has an id #TNFD-00PUS. The new Tritons now come with 
just 2 disks that contain all the data.

[Q2.4] I have loaded some file and now triton is "damaged" (I got a "System 
       Error") and cannot access my Triton anymore... what's up?
[A2.4] 
"Reset" the triton like this: Pressing down Button "0" and Button "Enter" and  
switch power on. Thats an initialize.

[Q2.5] Does the Triton save date and time after poweroff?
[A2.5] See: "Parameter Guide", section "Disk mode", p. 142: "0-3E: Set 
       Date/Time".
You can set date time in Disk/Utilities/Menu/Set Date/Time. The Triton store 
the date and time you set after power off. However the date/time is not updated 
by a clock, it must be manually updated for the time stamps on your disk files 
to be correct.

[Q2.6] Are there some "Easter eggs" (e.g., hidden features) on the Triton?
[A2.6] 
Here's a non exhaustive list. At bootup:

-- [Enter]+[0]: resets all the memory (blanks progs and combis)
-- [Enter]+[2] or [Enter]+[3]: self-test mode. You have to connect midi in to 
   out to see "MIDI OK". Use [Start/Stop] [REW] [FFW] to progress through the 
   tests.
-- [Enter]+[9]: gives more info about the OS. For example, an OS 2.0 gives:
	-- Triton Version 2.0.0B80
	-- date february 22 2000
	-- core Version 2.0.0B80
	-- preset Version 1.0.3

-- [Enter]+[Locate]: Starts OS upgrade
-- [Menu]+[9] during 15 seconds: initialize memory.
-- [Menu]+[1]: changes boot screen to "Triton Pro"
-- [Menu]+[2]: changes boot screen to "Triton ProX"
-- [Menu]+[3]: changes boot screen to "Triton"

[Q2.7] Can I connect an IDE hard disk to the Triton? Can I replace the internal 
       diskette drive by a 120MB super disk?
[A2.7] 
No. Only SCSI drives are recognized, if you own the SCSI extension board. If 
you want, you can remove the disk drive and replace it by a SCSI zip drive, but 
this operation is quite "dangerous"...

[Q2.8] How can I change the behaviour of the joystick, ribbon controller, ...?
[A2.8] 
Most of each parameter page of programs/combinations have "AMS" zones. Change 
them to use joystick, controllers, ...

[Q2.9] Is it possible to split the keyboard? How?
[A2.9] See: "Basic Guide", section "Combination mode", p. 56: "Key Zone tab 
       (key zone settings)"; "Basic Guide", p. 57: "Vel (Velocity) Zone Tab 
       (Velocity zone settings)"; "Parameter Guide", section "Combination 
       mode", p. 37-38: "Combination P4: Edit-Zone/Ctrl"; "Parameter Guide", 
       section "Sequencer mode", p. 59-60: "Sequencer P4: Zone/Ctrl".
Of course, it is! And you can do more: you can split by position (note) and by 
velocity range. All of that is possible in Combination or Sequencer modes.

[Q2.10] What's that "To Host" connector?
[A2.10] See: "Basic Guide", section "Introduction", p. 8-9: "Rear panel"; 
        "Basic Guide", section "MIDI Applications", p. 112-113: "Connecting a 
        computer (TO HOST connector)".
It's a computer serial cable for those who don't have a MIDI controller. It 
works like a MIDI in/out connector.

Ask your dealer for the "AG001B" (PC) or "AG002B" (Mac) cable and drivers. For 
Mac users: you need a serial connector. New Mac don't have it by default.

[Q2.11] My computer has only USB ports (e.g., Power Mac G3). How can it connect 
        to my Triton?
[A2.11] 
There exists USB MIDI and audio devices; it depends if you want to do MIDI 
and/or audio. Contact you computer dealer.

[Q2.12] Does the Triton have a digital in/out?
[A2.12] 
No. Maybe it will be a new extension card?

[Q2.13] My sustain pedal (of effect switch) don't work correctly: the effect is 
        inverted...

Go to global, then "menu" and controller. Modify the damper "polarity" (change 
the sign). Don't forget to save this setup by pressing the "rec/write" button.


*** 3. OS Upgrade ***

[Q3.1] What is the latest version?

OS 2.0. It has MANY enhancements. See the download section of this site to find 
where to download it.

[Q3.2] I've downloaded the latest OS from Korg Japan. Is it a Japanese version?
[A3.2] 
No. There actually are only one kind of OS version, the English one. There is 
no Japanese or Spanish version by now. This OS from Korg Japan will displays 
all his messages in English.

[Q3.3] Is the version 2.0 compatible with the Pro/ProX models?
[A3.3] 
YES, of course!

[Q3.4] My Triton has OS 1.0.4 and I've downloaded the OS 2.0 Do I need install

No.

[Q3.5] I've downloaded the OS 2, but it can fit in one diskette...

In fact, this file is a compressed archive (Zip or whatever), that holds the 
contents of three high density IBM-formatted diskettes (MS-DOS format, 1.44 
MB).

First, uncompress that file to you hard disk (with Unzip, for example).

Remark: Verify that you decompress also the "directory structure": you should 
obtain some directories like "disk1", "disk2" and "disk3" in your hard disk; 
otherwise, all the files would be messed in the same directory.

Then, copy the CONTENT of "disk1" to a blank (formated) diskette. Do the same 
for the two other disks. You are ready for the upgrade!

[Q3.6] OK, I've the three OS disks. What should I do?
[A3.6] 
1. Place disk 1 in the Triton disk drive.
2. While turing it on, hold the "Enter" and "Locate" buttons until a messages 
   appears on the screen.
3. While asked, insert Disk 2, then the Disk 3
4. When OS is upgraded, it is safer to clear all the sound memory by pressing 
   "Enter" and "0" at power on. Then reload the PCG's.

[Q3.7] The OS I downloaded is splitted in three files ending with "zip" (or 
       "exe"). When I copy them to three diskettes and start the upgrade 
       procedure, the Triton says "Insert Disk 1" and don't read the first 
       diskette. What's up?
[A3.7] 
Those three "zip" (or "exe") files are not recognized by the Triton: they are 
"archived". You have first to uncompress them and copy the result of 
uncompression to three separate diskettes. Please read the README information 
given with that files to know how exactly to uncompress them.


*** 4. Program Mode ***

[Q4.1] What happens when you hold notes on one program sound and switch to a 
       different program? Is the transition smooth?
[A4.1] 
Combination programs just shut off the notes (unless maybe the next combo has 
the same programs, but I am not sure).

Program mode oscillators do carry through on prog change, and the effects for 
the current program take over, so it isn't usually very smooth.


*** 5. Combination Mode ***

[Q5.1] How can I control an external instrument in a combi?

Assign the midi channel of the track to "external"


*** 6. Sequencer Mode ***

[Q6.1] The sounds in the sequencer sound not as good as in the Program or Combi 
       Mode...
[A6.1] See: "Parameter Guide", section "Sequencer mode", p. 48: "0-1F: Copy 
       From Combi (Copy from Combination)".
Have you also copied the insert and master effects of that sound to the track? 
If not, the sounds are "dry" (i.e., without effects).

Remark: Also note that when you "Copy From Combi" in sequencer mode, the 
combination only sounds right if you copy the effects. If you copy a 
Combination to 1-8, and it uses five effects, and you also copy a combination 
to 9-16, and it uses five different ones, one of the combinations isn't going 
to sound right. Don't forget you can only max 5 insert effects in a sequence...

[Q6.2] When I copy a combination to tracks, 8 tracks are use for that combi..

It's normal, because you can assign only one instrument and MIDI channel per

[Q6.3] Can I use all banks in the sequencer?
[A6.3] 
Yes.

[Q6.4] Can I put insert effects in all tracks?
[A6.4] See: "Parameter Guide", section "Sequencer mode", p. 75-77: "Sequencer 
       P8: Insert Effect"; "Parameter Guide", section "Sequencer mode", p. 
       77-78: "Sequencer P0: Master Effect".
You can use maximum 5 inserts effects for all the tracks. You have thus to 
choose which effects assign for each track.

Remark: you can group tracks for the same effect.

[Q6.5] How can I do "swing quantization"?
[A6.5] See: "Basic Guide", section "Sequencer mode", p. 68: "Quantize"; 
       "Parameter Guide", section "Sequencer mode", p. 46: "0-1f: Reso 
       (Realtime Quantize Resolution)"; "Parameter Guide", section "Sequencer

Quantize your track(s) with the "triplet" ("3") value.

[Q6.6] How can I save my sequences?
[A6.6] See: "Basic Guide", section "Saving Data", p. 40-41: "Saving on external 
       media"; "Parameter Guide", section "Disk mode", p. 139-141: "0-2: Save".
You have to go to DISK mode (press the DISK button). Press the save tab on the 
bottom of the screen, then press the save icon on the top right-hand corner of 
the screen. A menu will pop up and you will choose "SAVE SEQ" from that menu.

[Q6.7] Is the sequencer memory volatile?
[A6.7] 
Yes, it's in RAM. But the templates and preload pattern are saved in 
"permanent" Flash RAM.

[Q6.8] When I load a General MIDI song, the instruments aren't correct.
[A6.8] See: "Basic Guide", section "MIDI Applications", p. 112-113: "Connecting 
       a computer (TO HOST connector)"; "Parameter Guide", section "Global 
       mode", p. 115: "0-2a: System Preference".
Maybe you have not the GM Program Change mode selected. Press GLOBAL, then 
MENU, and select the MIDI page. You will be able to select the KORG or GM2 
ProgramChange mode. Write this setting in memory using the "Write Global 
Setting" command under the page menu.

[Q6.9] Can the sequencer record and play System Exclusive messages?
[A6.9] See: "Parameter Guide", section "Disk mode", p. 135: "21) Load and 
       Transmit MIDI Exclusive Data"; "Parameter Guide", section "Disk mode",

No, but you can record and play System Exclusive messages in Disk mode

[Q6.10] How can I control an external instrument?

Assign the midi channel of the track to "external"

[Q6.11] How can I create a cue list?
[A6.11] See: "Basic Guide", section "Sequencer mode", p. 70-71: "Creating and

        51-54: "Sequencer P1: Cue List".
This is actually very easy, just select the songs in the order you want them in 
the cue list and they will be played in that order. Think of your songs as 
parts instead. For each song you can decide how many times you want it 
repeated. You can also decide if you want each song to have different effects. 
However, the last doesn't work very well because loading effects take time so 
you get a delay during the playback. You can also convert your cuelist to a 
song when you have finished everything. However, when you do this, the setup 
for the effects from the first entry in the cue list is used and effect setups 
for the other entries in the list is ignorded. But it works good if you 
remember this.

[Q6.12] Can a cue list be used to load multiple SNG files?
[A6.12] 
No. A cue list can only play songs in the sequencer memory.

[Q6.13] How can I remove blank measures at the end of the song on the Master 
        Track?
[A6.13] See: "Parameter Guide", section "Sequencer mode", p. 63-64: "5-1G: 
        Delete Measure"; "System Version 2.0 Update Guide", section "Sequencer 
        mode", p. 18: "Sequencer P5: Track Edit".
Select these measures on a track, then delete them with the option "delete all 
tracks".

[OS2] You can also change the length of the song with the "Set Song Length" 
      feature in the menu page 5.

Remark: The "Set Song Length" feature cannot be undone. Think twice before 
deleting measures (or save your song before)...

[Q6.14] How can I insert a MIDI event (program change, control, ...) in a 
        track?
[A6.14] See: "Parameter Guide", section "Sequencer mode", p. 62: "5-1B: Event 
        Edit".
In Event Edit, press "insert" and change "note" to "prog" for example.

[Q6.15] How can I record pan or volume in a track?

Select "Overdub" (not "Overwrite") in "Recording Setup", tab "Preferences" and 
press record. Then change the values of pan/volume. It will be recorded.

You can also change the velocities of the notes in "Track Edit" mode (page 5, 
menu "Modify Velocity")

An other solution is to insert "Control Change" data in the track (Sequencer 
mode page 5, Menu "Create Control Data"). The Control Number for volume is 7, 
Pan is 10.

[Q6.16] How can I remove unnecessary volume changes in a track?
[A6.16] See: "Parameter Guide", section "Sequencer mode", p. 66: "5-1M: Erase

In sequencer mode Page 5, use the menu "Erase Ctrl Data". The Control number 
for volume is 7; for pan, it's 10.

[Q6.17] How can I change the tempo in a song?

        Edit".
In Sequencer mode page 5 (Track edit), select the Master Track, select the 
measure where to insert the tempo change, then step edit it (menu "Event 
Edit"). Press the "Insert" button and modify the tempo value if necessary.

[Q6.18] When using the sequencer, is it possible to select multiple tracks to 
        play along with the song (i.e. like a combination- layer programs and 
        set up split points?)

Yes, this can be done:

Copy a combi to seq along with fx and arpps then you can be controlling this 8 
or less tracks along with your 16

I mean in theory you could be controlling 16 tracks, with 16 splits.

I had a live set up one time that had 4 splits (some sounds on the furthest 
left,.then one octave of a hard weird synth sound, then up from that a bass 
sound,..then the upper two octaves had a symphonic string section). All of this 
was being played live with a drummer to 12 other tracks that were sequenced. 
Tracks 15 and 16 were routed out 1 and 2 for the drummer,...one for his left 
headphone, and one for his right. Instead of a monotinous metronome I gave him 
a meaty snare, bass, and highhats, that built with the song so he could know 
where he was at.

No. They are saved in RAM. You have to save it to disk and reload it after 
power-on.

[Q7.4] How can I save all my samples to disk?

Once you have defined your samples/MS (index, keys, etc ..) and the program 
using this MS, save (of course) the program in the non volatile memory, select 
DISK > SAVE > Sampling Data. Give the name of the ".ksc" file, select "All" and 
then "OK". That's all. The triton creates a ".ksc" file as well as a directory 
(with the same name as the ksc file) containing all the sample and MS files 
(.ksf & .kmp). When turning on your triton, you have to select DISK > LOAD, 
select the ".ksc" file you have saved before and then LOAD > Load selected.

[Q7.5] Has the Triton "time stretch","time slice","crossfade loop" features?
[A7.5] 
YES! in the OS 2.0.0.

[Q7.6] Can the Triton do resampling?

This is an old conversation. I believe Resampling is possible on the Triton. 
Try this experiment:

Steps to show Korg basic resampling ability:

1. Make sure you have a mic hooked up to Input 1.
2. Go into Sample mode.
3. Click Menu, and then Inset Effects.
4. Set up effect #2 as the Hold Delay effect. Turn it on.
5. Go back to Input Setup and route the mic to effect #2.
6. Say something to make sure you get some sound.
7. Go back to the Recording Page. You should see the levels jump when you talk.
8. Hit Record and talk.
9. While you are talking press the Joystick all the way to the top, say 
   something then let go. You should hear what you just said looping. The "Hold 
   Delay" effect.
10. Notice the levels continue to jump.
11. Hit Start and viola! you can re-sample.

Now this shows that the Triton has at least the ability reroute output audio 
back to input via the effects. You can add effects after the sample hold effect 
and record with those effects.

Korg just needs to clean up the implementation.

No you can not set the tempo of the arpeggiator and the sequencer 
independently.

Use TVF (Time Variant Filter). Take a look at some preset sounds and base your 
sound from that preset.

The insert effects apply to only one program (in Combi mode) or track (in 
Sequencer), while the master effects are global.

[Q12.3] Is it true that internal sounds and external sources (analog-Inputs)

Yes, it is! For example, is it possible to modulate an internal sounds via 
human voice (Mic+preamp at inputs).


*** 13. MIDI Connectivity ***

In Global mode P1 set the Triton's MIDI clock to "EXTERNAL MIDI".

[Q13.2] What is the better mode to use the Triton with an external sequencer?

With Triton, you can have:

-- 1 channel in Program mode
-- 8 channels in Combi mode
-- 16 channels in Sequencer mode

So, switch to Sequencer mode to have the maximum multitimbral capabilities when 
programming songs from an extrnal sequencer.

Don't forget copy the insert effects of the used programs/combis into the 
tracks...

[Q13.3] When connected to a MIDI controller, all my notes are "doubled"...
[A13.3] 
It's because your sequencer (or MIDI controller) does "Midi Thru", echoing 
every input note to the sequencer's output. Two solutions:

1. You can disable the "Thru" feature of your sequencer (or soundcard). See 
   their manuals...
2. The other solution is to disable "Local control" on the Triton:
	2.1. Press GLOBAL.
	2.2. Press MENU, then the MIDI soft button.
	2.3. Uncheck the "Local Control On" option (Triton will go in "Local Off").

   At this point, you should be able to send midi data to your sequencer, 
   without playing the internal sound generation. If you prefer this 
   configuration at the next power on, select the page manu soft button, and 
   select the "Write Global Setting" command to save this setting in memory.

[Q13.4] What exactly is sysex?
[A13.4] 
SysEx means System Exclusive. These are MIDI messages that are addressed for a 
particular synth, so you can send these messages and only the correct synth 
will respond to them. Files which contain only SysEx messages usually have a 
.SYX file extension.

The two main uses for SysEx are:

1. Make changes to a synth while a song is playing.
2. Send/Receive Patches/Performances/etc to and from a synth.

SysEx also allows you to access most of the functions of the synth that you can 
access from the keyboard via MIDI messages.

[Q13.5] Why does the Triton always go to bank G (GM) no matter what bank I 
        select in Cakewalk/Cubase/Voyetra or other sequenceprogram?
[A13.5] 
Go to Global mode, find System Preference/Bank Map, set that to Korg, it 
defaults to GM, that's why you can't get out of Bank G.

[Q13.6] Ok, now I can use bank A, but how can I use bank B AND ALSO the GM bank 
        in combination with all the banks.
[A13.6] 
This is a little more tricky, you have to find the 'controller' section in your 
sequenceprogram. Most of the time you can find it in some 'eventwindow' or 
something like that.

Controller are:

-- mod wheel(1)
-- sustain(64)
-- breath(2)
-- volume(7)
-- etc...

you need the following controllers: msb (controller 0) and lsb (controller 32)

*** 14. Connecting a Triton to a PC ***

[Q14.1] I have tried many times with the software to connect the cable to my 
        laptop. Every time the computer fires up, it Hangs. It doesn't 
        recognize the fact that the software is loaded. When I remove the cable 
        from either the laptop or the Triton, the computer starts from where it 
        left off. I have disabled the Infra red port of the laptop, but this 
        still doesn't get me anywhere. Everything I try ends in failure. Any 
        clues?

The problem it seems is with Windows 98. The Win.ini file must be purgedof any 
reference to drivers to Com port 1. Windows 95 does not suffer this problem, as 
it allocates the driver specifically to com port 1 and disregards the rest. 
Laptops in particular are also vulnerable to this problem as the Infra red 
driver is assigned to Com port 1. Even when the driver is disabled, on boot up, 
Win98 recognizes the fact that it spots a new device (Infra red) and loads 
immediately the driver back in again.

*** 16. MOSS Extension ***

[Q16.1] Is the MOSS extension polyphonic and multitimbral?

Yes. In Combi an Sequencer modes, you can assign 1 to 6 MOSS voices to a track: 
in the Zone control, select the MOSS setup tab and reconfigure the number of 
voices on each track.

Remark: Like the Z1, the MOSS card utilizes Sondious XG technology, a physical 
modeling synthesis system developed jointly by Yamaha and Stanford University 
here in the San Francisco area. Other synths utilizing Sondious XG include 
Yamaha's EX-5, EX-7 and EX-5R, as well as their virtual horn module.

[Q16.2] How can I use the MOSS extension in the sequencer and in Combination 
        mode?
[A16.2] See: "EXB-MOSS Owner's Manual", section "Bank F Operations", p. 7-10; 
        "EXB-MOSS Owner's Manual", section "Combination mode", p. 47:

You have to "assign voices" to tracks: press "Menu" and then select P4: 
Zone/Ctrl. Select a MOSS Tab "1-8" or "9-16" depending on what track you are 
using (only visible if you have the MOSS expansion).

Tadaaa!!! Here you can assign voices to your tracks, but remember: Total Max: 6 
voices.

In the lower part of the screen you can also assign what track to use as 
refference for applying insert effects. Note that you can't assign more than 
one insert "track" to the MOSS.


*** 17. PCM Extensions ***

[Q17.1] For what is the diskette delivered with the EXB-PCM expansion? Why 
        can't I access the new sounds?
[A17.1] 
The EXB expansion chip is only a SAMPLE extension. You can then use them in 
programs. The diskette deliverded with the chip gives you a bank of programs 
and combinations using it. There are two files: "BANK_C.PCG" and "BANK_D.PCG". 
They are the same as the original "PRELOAD.PCG" file, except that one bank (C 
or D) of programs and combinations (C or D) is overwritten by the new programs.

[Q17.2] Do I have to reload the programs/combinations/etc from the PCM-01 
        diskette each time I powerup, or is this permanently added to memory?
[A17.2] 
The programs/combis loaded and extension samples (in ROM) are permanently kept 
in memory (until you load an other PCG). You don't need to reload the disk at 
powerup.


*** 18. SCSI ***

[Q18.1] What's the SCSI #ID of the Triton? Can it be changed?

It's 7. This value is fixed.

[Q18.2] Can I use a standard PCI SCSI card?

No. Only the Korg Triton's one.

Yes, if there is no conflict with SCSI IDs, terminations and voltages.

Remark: Do this absolutely AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! A SCSI bus is not a network. It 
is bus for linking peripheral devices like hard disks to a single computer. If 
you attach two computers (a PC and a Triton) to the same single host bus then 
you stand every chance of corrupting data, breaking the PC and or the Triton.

[Q18.4] Which formats can read the Triton?
